Social Studies Education - Technology Requirements

The following chart highlights the program emphasis on preparing beginning teachers who are proficient in the use, application, and integration of instructional technology.  Candidates have access to rich and varied instructional technologies and support for their use. Program instructional faculty model the use of technology-for-teaching and challenge students to consider the value of instructional technology in school settings.  In the required courses of the initial preparation programs (ESOC 2450, 4450L, 4/6350, 4/6360, 5/7460,5/7560), attention is focused on a critical examination of instructional technology as a support for rationale-based and reflective social studies teaching and learning, rather than as an end unto itself.  The student teaching seminar uses LiveText as both a course-delivery and portfolio development technology.  At the end of the student teaching semester, candidates present web-based electronic portfolios to demonstrate their accomplishments on the following standards (based on GSTEP principles):

III-B organizes, allocates, and manages time, space, activities, technology and other resources to provide active and equitable engagement of diverse students in productive tasks.

III-G uses effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

IV- G uses resources, including available technology, to keep accurate and up-to-date records of student work, behavior, and accomplishments.

V-F uses appropriate resources, materials, and technology to enhance instruction for diverse learners.

In this way, instructional technology in support of powerful social studies instruction is both an idea infused in the content of social studies teacher preparation and a performance standard candidates meet before they complete the social studies education program.
