The Social Studies Program uses only certificated social studies teachers as practicum teachers, mentors, and cooperating teachers in all of its field experiences.  At the completion of student teaching, student teachers formally evaluate their cooperating teachers, and these evaluations are considered in future placement decisions.  Practicum-site/cooperating teacher assessments are systematically collected in ESOC 2450L and ESOC 4450L.

The Social Studies Program uses the term "field instructor" to refer to university-based educators who work with candidates in the field in support and supervision roles.  Field instruction is carried out by program faculty members, all of whom are experts in social studies education, and by graduate teaching assistants, all of whom are experienced social studies teachers and developing scholars in social studies education (see NCSS 3.2).  On rare occasions, the program has employed practicing and retired social studies teachers to work as instructors and/or field instructors.  The Social Studies Program coordinator works closely with field instructors and graduate teaching assistants as part of his instructional load.  Within the last couple of years, a community of inquiry has developed around field instruction.  Field instructors meet together, research together, share ideas, and pose problems of practice as intellectual concerns.  Field instruction is a strength of the social studies program.
